Demand for Software Testing services has increased to dizzy heights and is still rising exponentially. According to the data published recently by Freelancer, world’s biggest marketplace for hiring freelance talent, the number of Software Testing jobs posted on the site jumped from 196 in 3rd quarter 2012 to 5,200 jobs in 4th quarter (an increase of 2544%). During the same period, the number of jobs relating to website Testing increased from 182 to 3923 (an increase of 2055%). These two ranked second and third in the fastest growing categories of jobs posted on the Freelancer site. This alone shows the level of demand for Testing services and the explosive rate of growth that this sector is experiencing.
Speaking on this trend, Lola Benson, A Senior Consultant at N-Point Consulting, London had this to say: “Most of the small and medium scale Software developing companies and some big companies in the industry have Already started to outsource the Testing component of their Software development projects. Outsourcing has many benefits to the Software developing companies and companies are under constant pressure to cut costs.”
Big cost reduction, greatly improved quality of the products and shortened delivery time are the main benefits of outsourcing. Outsourcing in different industries can take different forms depending on the reasons for outsourcing. Outsourcing of Software Testing is fast becoming the norm in the industry because the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages.
Forms of Outsourcing
In the Software industry, the following forms of Outsourcing are usually adopted.
End-to-end service - Outsourcing the total Testing component of the project, including developing a test strategy, planning and testing.
On-Demand Testing - When the need arises, services of an outside Testing company can be obtained.
Resource Augmentation - When additional resources such as manpower, test tools, or the hardware are required they can be obtained from a Testing company.
Acceptance Testing - Usually the User Acceptance Testing is done by a third party.
On-site Outsourcing - Testing done at client site.
Outsourcing offshore: Software Testing can be outsourced to an organization outside the country.

Capital cost and maintenance costs for acquiring and maintaining the test tools and systems, salaries and Administrative costs for recruiting and keeping highly paid test personnel can be very high compared to the cost of outsourcing. Money saved can be utilized elsewhere.” Talking about offshore outsourcing, Mr. Benson said “There are several possible pitfalls in Outsourcing offshore though there may be a significant cost savings. Among the disadvantages are differences in culture, language, time zone, high travel costs, increased management costs and IP security. Sometimes the losses from these can surpass the savings made.”
He further said “Our Testing services are very flexible and customized to suit the client’s requirements and budget, and blend with the client’s systems, processes and methodologies. We provide any type of Testing with our consultants and Testing staff qualified and experienced in most types of development environments, systems, platforms, test tools, etc.”
